Dear Sir:

            The Essex Baseball/Softball program has formed this fund in memory of Neil Rivers, Jr., who was shot and killed by an individual who was trying to burglarize his home. Neil was only 20 years old and had spent most of his youth playing in baseball in Essex.

            The youth of today have many negative influences in their lives. Baseball, softball and other organized sports or activities can be a positive influence, especially with parental participation and involvement. Organized sports can teach our youth teamwork, physical activity and fitness. They can gain a sense of self-worth through all of their hard work. We, as parents, coaches, and managers, need to encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, umpires and officials at every practice or game.

            It is our intent to collect donations from local individuals and companies in the Baltimore, Maryland, metropolitan area who may wish to donate. These donations will be placed in a checking/savings account to be held pending applications by individuals for our help.

            If there are any individuals (youth under the age of 19) whose parents do not have enough money to pay for their child’s registration to play an athletic sport in the Essex Recreation program, then we would use these funds to pay for their registration. Likewise, if an individual does not have enough money to pay for bats, mitts, gloves, spikes, etc., then upon approval of the Board of Directions, we would use these funds to purchase those needed items for the youth in need. The Board will meet whenever it is necessary to review the applications for assistance.
